Friends of Point Beach State Forest
Volunteer Opportunities Abound at Point Beach State Forest. If you have some free time and would like to put it to some good use, we have the opportunity for you!
We have lots of projects for people of all interests. Call Point Beach State Forest at (920)794-7480 for more information or click the link to the right of this page for more information on how you can participate in any of these activities.
Piping Plover/Shore Bird Survey - Like to bird??? We need volunteers to help with our brand new Piping Plover and other shore bird Survey during the last three weeks of May and the first two weeks of June. We will have training at Point Beach on the first week of May. Because this is part of a state wide initiative, the final details are still being worked out and should be aavailable in early April.
Dune Thistle Count - Last year we did not have enough volunteers to count all the dune thistle along our entire 6 miles of coast line. This year the count will be either the last week of August or very early in September depending on availability of expert staff.
Ice Age Trail - We will be installing the first section of the Ice Age Trail through the state forest during the week of September 13 through September 17, 2006. Call Point Beach and we will connect you with the Ice Age Trail coordinators.
Bike/Ski Patrol - We are interested in implementing a bike patrol in the spring/summer/fall and a cross-country ski patrol in the winter. Volunteers would be issued a vest for identification plus a portable radio. They would serve as eyes and ears for law enforcement staff in reporting rule infractions and injuries/accidents.
Invasive Species Monitoring/Irradication - We are always looking for volunteers to help our staf find, monitor, and implement control measures for a number of invasives such as Garlic Mustard, Spotted Knapweed, Phragmite Grass, Lyme Grass, Black Locust, Barberry, Scotch Pine and several others.
Beach Plants of Interest - we would like to survey the pupolations of Thick Spike Wheat Grass and several other beach plants. Plants are easy to identify but not always easy to spot. Surveys can be scheduled any time during the summer at the convenience of the volunteer.
Point Beach State Forest Plant List - we would like someone to coordinate a plant (wildflower) checklist similar to our bird checklist for forsest visitors. This would require some botanical knowledge on the volunteer's part. This project can be scheduled at the convenience of the volunteer.
Historical Research and Fact Checking - We would like to have more information on many different aspects of the history and culture of Point Beach and its surrounding area. This project can be scheduled at the convenience of the volunteer.
