FRIENDS OF POINT BEACH STATE FOREST

MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 2009 BOARD MEETING

  December 08, 2009

MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER BY PRESIDENT RANDY BEECHER AT 6:45PM

BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT:  R Beecher, K Duveneck, K Beer, M Timm

Park representative Guy Willman was also present

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Randy Beecher presented the Treasurer’s report for Bob Pilzak.  It showed expenditures for November were $2069.34.  There were no receipts for the month.

The checking account balance stands at $3060.92.  Savings account balance remains the same at $9541.18.  Final accounting for this years Halloween Weekend shows a profit of approximately $275.00.

There are currently 58 paid membership units.

EVENT:  Members Carl and Sandy Johnson have been in contact with both Guy and Randy about hosting an event at Point Beach for a group they belong too.  The event would take place near the end of June, and the only thing they are requesting from the Group at this time is help in promoting the event in the community.

PARK NATURALIST:  Randy brought up the idea of extending the park naturalist in 2010 which would allow for the program to run into the Fall of the year.  Some study will have to be done to determine how many additional hours would be involved, and whether matching grants might be obtained to offset the additional cost.  Mike Timm stated that this years naturalist Jessica Johnsrud has indicated an interest in returning in 2010 if the Friends Group decides to once again fund the naturalist program.

FOREST PLAN MEETINGS:  Guy reported that at this time no definite date has been set for public input meetings regarding the new forest plan for Point Beach.

LANDSCAPING:  Mike Timm reported there has been no response from Nancy Aten about the design work for the landscaping project.  It was suggested that if no word is received sometime in early 2010, that the Group hire a qualified person to design the project.  (NOTE:  The following day Debbie Timm did email board members that Nancy Aten had contacted her and is still willing to do a design plan for the project)  Guy mentioned that some preliminary work could be done by the Friends Group, such as removing the pea stone gravel and replacing it with a weed barrier and plantings in the areas next to the building.

Randy questioned whether some type of screening structure could be constructed for the vending machines in order to make them less visible in front of the lodge building.

Randy also asked Guy whether he thought it would be feasible to have some members at the lodge on winter weekends to sell warm beverages.  Guy said he thought it would be feasible, but weather and ski conditions would be the determining factor.

CROSS COUNTRY SKI’S:  There was some discussion about the collection of donated ski's and boots that have collected at the park.  Guy suggested that if the Group was interested in pursuing offering ski’s for use or rent, they should contact the Two Rivers Rec Department and/or Two Rivers High School.  He stated that the School Forest uses training type ski’s and boots which can be quickly matched and fitted when large groups arrive at the forest.  Those types of ski’s also require very low maintenance.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:45PM

Respectfully submitted,

Kevin Duveneck, Secretary
